about

Name: Aydan Corvus
Race: Elf voidsent Elezen
Gender Identity: Masculine (he/him)
Age: Unknown (late 20s, early 30s?)
Sexuality: Gay
Height: Slightly shorter than Min height (5'8)
Eye color: Red
Hair color: White
Distinguishing Features: horns, fangs, claws
Nameday: 22nd sun of the 6th Astral Moon
Current Residence: Unknown, has an apartment that occasionally gets used in Ishgard, and spends a decent amount of time at his friend's estate, also in Ishgard
Occupation: Death Adventurer
Pessimist. Introvert. Risk-taker. Self-assured. Skeptic. On the surface, Aydan seems to be withdrawn and unsociable, preferring to linger in the background in groups and defer to others when possible. If approached while alone, he will likely seem intimidating or disinterested. Scratch that surface, though, and he has a myriad of reasons to be so cautious. Few are able to look beyond his sinister features, but Aydan is content with the knowledge that they are, in his mind, simply a warning to others of what lies beneath.Self-control is this man's lifeblood, it is the protocol under which he operates, because he is far too aware of what might happen should he let that control slip. Aydan has chained his identity to the guilt he bears, and the Sisyphean weight of his hunger for dark deeds that drags him endlessly towards his downfall. He cannot deny the call of the Void. Those with the ability to sense it in some way would see that his aether is steeped in umbral energies. Aydan may claim it is an affliction of recent years, but it has been with him since birth, a scar upon his soul, and one that he has embraced willingly. The Void is an integral part of him.Still, those that know him well would know he is a determined and loyal friend, even if there are very few in the realms that would ever call him such. Sympathy for the downtrodden often gets the better of him, and he is fast to lend his blade to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Despite his stoic and sometimes even sinister demeanor, Aydan readily steps up to aid or accompany those he cares about with whatever they may need. It is with these qualities that he's earned and maintained the trust of those close to him.Aydan's favored weapons are a scythe, a rapier, and a greatsword that he crafted from the crystalline umbral material left in the wake of Hades' defeat. In the company of the Scions and others aligned to Hydaelyn, he typically keeps these weapons hidden with glamours. He is, owing to his existence as a Voidsent, rather difficult to kill. The abundance of aether on the Source allows him to recover quickly when taking hits in battle, and his Ancient self's incantations and control over death makes mortality a long-forgotten concern.Likes: Oranges, excuses to kill things
Dislikes: Having attention drawn to him, light-aspected aether, being idle for too long

roleplay hooks

WIPCurrently Aydan is still reeling from the events of the past several months. Having regained most of his memories of life as an Ascian, and his life before the sundering, thanks to his Thirteenth shard finally agreeing to soulbond with him, Aydan is trying to come to terms with what he's lost, without losing sight of everything he has now.
In his moodier moments, he may travel to the First to fight the seemingly endless waves of cursed elven knights that haunt Laxan Loft.
It is possible he has been spotted now and then heading deep into the ruins in the South Shroud. It is unclear why.
Are you a Warrior of Light or a Scion? You may have noticed Aydan working alongside the Scions, here and there, if you wish to incorporate that. He can have been as involved as you wish, either on the outskirts of the organization or one who has frequently stepped up to aid the cause.Do you have keen aether-sense? Aydan may stand out to you as a being steeped in the Umbral energies of the Void. Further still, you may notice his soul is not of the Source. He is also bereft of a physical body, and is a projection of a soul, much like Cyella, Unukalhai, and the Scions when they were on the First, though this is harder to discern as he is many parts rejoined and stabilized by Ascian magicks. Are you an Ascian, Amaurotine, or similarly associated? Those with close ties to Emet-Selch may find something familiar about him, as he was one of his students, and has been working with the Convocation since the sundering, in various incarnations.

Lore

(Spoilers through patch 6.2 ahead)//The Short Version//
Once an Amaurotine turned Ascian, by the name of Thanatos, lost to the Void when the Thirteenth was corrupted. Now many times reborn with a long and difficult history, unfortunate circumstance has brought Aydan to a life upon the Source, leaving behind a dark past of his own making on the First prior to its Flood. Existing as a displaced soul, like the other Ascian-saved survivors of the Thirteenth, and acting as an instrument of the Convocation, he works with the Scions as a spy, leading a complicated double-life. Since the overall dissolution of the Ascians, he bides his time, waiting for a new direction to present itself, while dedicating himself to aiding those close to him. He has also once again taken up Thanatos' duty of guiding wayward souls.
//The Long Version//
In that golden era before the sundering there lived an ambitious Amaurotine named Thanatos, the reaper. Possessed of a formidable and discerning mind, Thanatos’ propensity for problem solving and creativity was boundless, as was his control over the dominion of death. However, it was coupled with a cruel demeanor and short-tempered attitude that did not suit the calm, community-oriented mindset of the ancient world. It was this worrying nature that had him rejected repeatedly from the Convocation, vying for the seat of Emet-Selch. Intrigued by his potential and hoping to temper Thanatos' ruthlessness, Emet-Selch opted instead to take him on as a student. The callous creativity he possessed proved a valuable asset in dealing with troubled and wayward souls, and in no time at all his loyalty to his master was steadfast. Thanatos, despite his general irritability, took his role as a soul-guide very seriously, and his compassion for broken lives was unparalleled.
Ever eager to prove himself, when the end of things was looming, Thanatos did not hesitate to aid the Convocation in Zodiark’s summoning. For his loyalty after the sundering, he was reborn a tempered, yet sundered soul, and gathered to fill the Ascians’ ranks in the wake of Hydaelyn’s devastation. When the Thirteenth fell into darkness, becoming the Void, an ascian fell along with it. Thanatos’ shard became a formidable voidsent, who had to be subdued and defeated when he turned on his brethren. Unfortunately, the Void had taken its toll, and each time his corrupted soul was reborn he inevitably succumbed to the Void. The convocation opted to abandon the shard; after all, he was naught more than a pawn, and so he lingered, trapped in an endless cycle, for ages. Thanatos was mostly forgotten about, except for Emet-Selch, who his soul somehow kept calling out to, loyal to the very end.Biding his time, the voidsent that Thanatos had become was using the Void's access to other worlds to gather up and absorb each of his shards, seeking to become more whole, more powerful, so that he could survive the ruthless heirachy of the Void, and so that Emet-Selch might once again see him as more than an abomination. With each rejoining, that shard of his soul was gathered up, the Voidsent even going so far as to find ways into untouched Reflections, reaping each piece of himself. Throughout the ages, he would find a way to Emet-Selch's side over and over again, as best he could, tethered to the Void as he was. He even served as Reaper Avatar to Emperor Solus, protecting the man from assassination plots and anything untoward that came his way.Thanatos' shard on the First was Aydan, an elf of the kingdom of Laxan. He was born with chilling red eyes compared to his family line's bright blue, and thought to be an ill omen, a blight upon his noble family. All the way back to his earliest memories, he felt the call of the shadows beyond his realm, drawn to the rift and the dark between worlds. Aydan often found himself mired in trouble of his own making, be it simple mischief or outright danger. This proclivity for misfortune was of course a result of his Void shard reaching out to him, but something about Aydan, lost and pining for a love he couldn't have, made Thanatos sympathize with the young man, and lend the young elf his power. Taking up the scythe, young Aydan became a reaper, accepting a pact with Thanatos as his avatar. Thanatos could be patient, after all, mortal lives were so short. This attraction to the dark made Aydan all too willing to throw his lot in with the Shadowkeeper when she came calling. It was under the Shadowkeeper’s employ that he honed his skills as a killer. She found him quite useful due to his ties to the royal family, weaponizing his newfound bitterness towards them when their prince, his lover in secret, announced his betrothal to a noblewoman from another region. It was a union of diplomacy, the prince’s obligation, but Aydan saw it only as a betrayal, especially with the bitter Voidsent whispering to him. Aydan was all too willing to dispose of the royal family to advance the Shadowkeeper’s goals--or so he thought. When the moment came to strike down his lover, he faltered, and for that failing, the Shadowkeeper lashed out, disposing of Aydan with her dark magicks.Unable to die due to his attachment to the Raised reflection of himself, waiting in the Void, Aydan hurtled into the Rift. He cried out into the dark for help in a futile bid to save himself, and something answered. Given full access to Aydan now in the Rift, the Voidsent joined with him, allowing Aydan to become more whole, now nine parts rejoined. However, instead of consuming the young man's soul and making him just another part of himself, Thanatos lost to Aydan's willpower when they joined, leaving the Voidsent dormant.Preparing to end his role as Emperor Solus and curious to see what had become of his loyal pet, seeing an opportunity, Emet-Selch took pity on the wayward soul and they struck a deal: salvation in the form of a new life on another star, in exchange for a simple favor...As it turned out, the favor would lead him into a life that was not so simple. Emet-Selch plucked the drifting soul from the Rift and placed it where he saw fit. Upon arriving on the Source, Aydan, hoping to leave his own past far behind him and begin anew, caught sight of a pair of elves--elezen, that looked uncannily like twin siblings he'd lost during the conflict on the First. Following them, Aydan found himself among the Scions, seeking to protect these two from whatever dangers they found themselves in, perhaps as some form of atonement. From there, he aided the Scions in their efforts against the darkness, even came to befriend and care about them, all the while wondering when his Ascian master would come calling. And still, the Void sang to him. Aydan took up the mantle of the Dark Knight in secret to satiate this hunger. As he delved deeper into those studies and gave in to his umbral energy, things began to change. Eventually, to his horror, the horns sprouted, and the rest of his more monstrous features began to develop. Afraid of becoming a monster entirely, Aydan sought out the path of the Red Mage, hoping the methods its training taught might help balance his aether. It did, for a time, but like the voidsent, he couldn't deny the hunger for bloodshed, misery, and aether that he felt. Alongside his work with the Scions, Aydan would seek out mercenary work to satiate those needs, taking jobs without scruple, and following rumors to dark avenues, anything to satisfy his hunger so as not to risk the safety of his companions. Then came the Crystal Exarch's meddling, and his clandestine return to where his story had all started-- The First. Aydan had never learned the full truth of what had become of his home star, so waking up alone in Lakeland, in the ruins of his homeland, was unbearable. Harder still it was to learn that it had been just over a century since he'd left, time and all of the devastation the Flood had caused left his home unrecognizable. Hounded for his dark aether by the Sin Eaters, Aydan was forced to take up the Dark Knight's greatsword once more to protect himself from the Light. For three years he wandered the Light-scarred land of Norvrandt, awaiting the arrival of the Warrior of Light with the others that had been brought over by the Exarch's magic. It was there in the First, in those three years, that Aydan would finally, like a loyal hound, return to his master's side. Emet-Selch was curious about his wayward disciple and pleased to find that he had followed the vague directions he'd been assigned quite splendidly. Aydan had so many questions, and hungry for the answers Emet-Selch could provide. Though, ultimately Emet-selch decided it best to keep Aydan in the dark about his true origins, it still took little effort for the Ascian to take advantage of his doubts and loneliness and wrap Aydan around his finger.Ultimately Aydan's loyalty mattered little in the end. Emet-Selch fell, and Aydan was left questioning his role, his identity... Everything. What would he do now? There was no home to go back to on the First, and the life he'd been living on the Source was built on lies...Meanwhile, trouble was brewing for the Voidsent, sleeping in his dominion on the Thirteenth. War encroached upon his secluded hiding place as Golbez amassed a greater following.Ultimately, Aydan was able to return to the Source with the Scions, easier to simply resume the task that Emet-Selch had given him, watching over the Warrior of Light.[Endwalker details under construction]
In the months following Elidibus’ defeat and the end of the Convocation’s machinations to bring about the Rejoining, Aydan floundered. Memories of his lives before, his time as Thanatos, his deep-rooted loyalty to Emet-Selch, came slowly trickling back to him as Thanatos sought to escape the Void fully that he might protect himself from the oncoming conflict. Then came the battle with Fandaniel, and Zodiark’s fall. Both Aydan and his Voidsent felt the absence of Zodiark's influence keenly. This fear spurred Thanatos to action, giving in and allowing himself to become part of Aydan, finally seeing that Aydan had a better chance at a realized future than what was left of the Ascian did. Now fully aware of his lengthy existence, Aydan has embraced his new enlightened consciousness, considering himself, as Aydan, not Thanatos, the culmination of all of the progress and difficulties his soul has endured throughout the ages. Despite this improved awareness of the self, though, he now grapples with the full weight of everything he has lost, fought so hard to regain, and ultimately failed to regain. Surrounded by mortals who wouldn't understand, he struggles with the isolation of his knowledge and grief.

Organizations
Scions of the Seventh Dawn - Vouched for by the Warrior of Light, Aydan is considered a reliable ally and member of the Scions. While many among them may side-eye his dark tendencies, he's proven himself a valuable asset, aiding in their efforts to save Eorzea and beyond. He is particularly fond and protective of the Levellieur twins, as they bear a remarkable resemblance to twin siblings he lost to the conflict on the First. He has a mildly contemptuous relationship with Thancred following some interpersonal drama from Aydan's early days among the Scions.
The Ascians- Aydan's involvement with their schemes is not widely known to most of their ranks, and he ultimately only answers to Emet-Selch, since most of the other members are as unaware of his true identity as he is.Individuals
The Warrior of Light -
- If your character is an Azem shard/WoL and you would like to play along with that, please send me a tell! I'd be happy to. It's easiest to adapt in the idea that Aydan works among the Scions in a lesser capacity than his primary canon, and your character might know of him or recognize him but not be as familiar. In this variation, he may have laid low and kept his head down when dragged to First, not wishing to draw attention to himself and raise too many questions.
- Vilyette Lionnellais - (the character that has played the WoL in Aydan's primary canon) Aydan and Vilyette became fast friends once he arrived on the Source and tracked her down. This was in part due to Aydan's proclivity for lying, but only in part. She won him over quickly with her steadfast loyalty and kindness, something Aydan was sorely in need of at the time. He confides in her more than most, and considers her his closest friend.
Lorelai Ylesar - Aydan and Lorelai have a contentious relationship, but ultimately they mean well and both care about each other. Aydan finds Lorelai's inquisitive nature grating, and Lorelai finds Aydan's constant spurning of his amorous advances entertaining. Lorelai works alongside Vilyette and the Scions.Mizuki Jinh - ( https://mizukijinh.carrd.co/# ) A young Miq'ote that Aydan befriended and took under his wing in some ways to help her get back on her feet. Now she is a formidable adventurer with stories and successes of her own.Azem Apollo - A recently reformed shard of Azem from the days before the end of Amaurot, named Apollo. Aydan stumbled across them in the months following Emet-Selch's demise and quickly realized who they were. Like Vilya and the other Warriors of Light, Aydan feels compelled to protect them. He has since grown strangely fond of them.More bonds and further plotlines can be found at the Carrd for <<scion>>, the FC Aydan belongs to
